NORTH WILKESBORO, NC.
(November 10, 2009) – A hard rain Tuesday from the remnants of tropical storm Ida failed to dampen the spirits of a Wilkes County community excited about the rebirth of the historical North Wilkesboro Speedway.
Approximately 300 people, including county and city officials, former NASCAR drivers who raced on the 0.625-mile track and one-time speedway employees, braved a chilly rain to gather in the track’s covered garage and listen to Speedway Associates Inc. President Alton McBride Jr. describe his group’s plans for resurrecting the speedway that has been dormant for 13 years.
“We are going to bring back the opportunity for old school memories,” McBride said. “We have looked long and hard for the relationships that understand what we’re doing here. We want people that share our vision, share our mission statement and that are going to bring the best possible product in events and racing. We have a lot of things we’re going to bring here that don’t have anything to do with racing that’s in letters-of- intent already; that has been in letters-of-intent for a year now.”
McBride cited those as being two festivals and, hopefully, a fair. However, the tough short track will return to its rightful place in the racing community on Oct. 3, 2010 with a 250-lap USARacing Pro Cup Series event. The nation’s premier short-track circuit will take one of its five Championship Series races to North Wilkesboro on what was the traditional fall NASCAR Cup weekend through 1996. Read More.
